THE superior fitness of Cardigan ABC cruiserweight Josh Mellor in the latter parts of each round saw him clinch a split points decision following an action-packed bout against Kohen Wiliams (Cwmgwarch ABC) in Gorseinon on Friday night.

Although both men proved strong punchers capable of inflicting some serious damage, neither was quite able to land that knockout blow.

The following evening saw Cardigan ABC’s Einir Lewis, a 10-year-old from Eglwyswrw, make her debut against Lauren Rees (Port Talbot Bulldogs) in a 46kg bout at Port Talbot.

Despite conceding six inches, Lewis came out really strongly in the first round and took Rees by surprise with the success of her right hand.

By the second round the south Walian had started to take control with her long jab and went on to take a unanimous decision despite an extremely encouraging performance by the Cardigan girl.

Then on Sunday, Einir's elder brother, Dyfan, and fellow 14-year-old clubmate Emyr James took part in a WABA minors and schools festival at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens.

Lewis boxed Harvey Beer (Prince of Wales ABC) and – having dominated from the start – went on to win his second successive bout comfortably on a unanimous decision.

Pitted against Jayden Price (Aberdare ABC), James gave a good account of himself in the first round against an extremely hard-hitting opponent.

Price’s power started to tell over the next two rounds, however, although the Cardigan boy bravely stood his ground.

The 10-second hammer had sounded when James was caught by a fierce left hook, sending him to the canvas and prompting the referee to step in and stop the contest with just five seconds left on the clock.
