CARDIGAN ABC’s Dion Jones won an all-action bout at Swansea on Saturday night when he clinched a unanimous points decision against Cai Newell, of Warehouse ABC.

Making only his second appearance in a Cardigan vest, the 14-year-old Jones – competing at 63 kg – boxed flat out for the full three rounds, perhaps trying a bit too hard to win via stoppage.

Newell was forced to take a standing a count in the second round as Jones continued to pile on the pressure, loading up every punch, but the dogged Swansea boy held on until the end.

“Dion has great potential,” Cardigan ABC head coach Guy Croft commented afterwards. “We just have to calm him down a bit and get him to box a bit more rather than trying to knock everybody out.”

The previous evening had seen Emyr James, another Cardigan 14-year-old, make his debut at 59kg against fellow newcomer Joshua Donovan, of Rhoose ABC.

Following an entertaining bout, in which both boxers had their successes, it was the home boxer who was awarded victory by unanimous decision, although James impressed his coaches by showing considerable heart.
