A SPECIAL football match will be taking place in Lampeter next week to celebrate the centenary of a Ceredigion football league.

The Costcutter Ceredigion League was formed in 1921, but the planned centenary celebrations were postponed due to the covid pandemic and restrictions put in place.

Now that restrictions have been lifted and preparations completed, The Costcutter Ceredigion League will be playing a special friendly match with a mixed squad made up of players from the league. Their opponents will be a mixed squad made up of players in The Cambrian Tyres League.

They will be vying for the Beca Cup so despite it being a friendly, there will be a competitive element and all participants will be presented with specially engraved commemorative trophies.

The Costcutter League has announced the squad that will feature in the match, with Steffan Jones, Iolo Thomas, Mickey Wilcox, Ifan Davies, Iwan Jones and Meredydd Derbyshire representing Ffostrasol, Josh Grota, Adam Williams, Liam James and Josh Mellor representing Llechryd, Liam Doherty, Matthew White and Llion Williams representing Cardigan, Rhodri George of Crymych, Joe Jenkins of Felinfach and Gethin Scourfield of Llanboidy. Bargod’s Lewis Jones and Lucian Evans, Rhys Jon James of Felinfach and Heulyn Jones of Lampeter are on the standby list.

The match between The Costcutter League and The Cambrian Tyres League will take place at North Road, Lampeter on Wednesday, September 20 at 7pm. Entry will be free and there will be the chance to buy a special centenary match programme and/or to donate to a bucket collection.

Following the game, there will be a post-match function at the rugby club.

It is hoped that the game will become an annual event to celebrate the two leagues that serve the county of Ceredigion and have honed the skills of many players, with the most talented going on to further their careers at higher levels.
