Relegation-haunted Llechryd are preparing for arguably the most vital game of the season against visitors and fellow strugglers Stackpole in the

Pembroke County Cricket League Division Two.

As the third from bottom Teifisiders went down by 116 runs at Saundersfoot it was a far more profitable day for Stackpole who picked up 19

points from a draw against third-placed Narberth and closed the gap on Llechryd to just three points.

Fielding a crop of juniors and veterans Llechryd bowled accurately and contained the home high-flyers to 75 runs from the first 25 overs.

But dropped catches were to prove costly as Saundersfoot posted a useful total of 213-7.

Vastly-experienced all-rounder John Mansbridge was not out 73 and opener Gareth Edwards also wielded the willow to good effect in making 84.

Despite skipper John Curran again leading from the front with a fine innings of 41, which included 22 in one over, the Teifisiders lost wickets

and after Curran departed lbw there was scant resistance as the innings closed on 97.

Medium-pacer Neil Powling did the damage for the Seasiders with an inspired spell of bowling that brought him five wickets for just eight runs

and Mansbridge followed up his heroics with the bat with figures of 2-12.

His many friends in Pembrokeshire cricket joined in congratulating Llechryd veteran seamer Peter Betteley who has been selected for the England

Over 70s in a one-day international against Australia at Banbury Cricket Club in Oxfordshire tomorrow (Wednesday).

Relegated Division Three basement boys Llechryd 2nds put up a spirited showing against Llanrhian at the RDM Oval before losing by eight wickets.

Llechryd posted 172-4 thanks mainly to Andrew Fletcher (59 not out), Ollie Roberts (35) and Andrew Davies (29 not out) but the visitors got the

runs for the loss of two wickets.

Crymych eased their Division Four relegation worries with an eight wicket win over bottom club Hundleton and picked up 29 points.

Steffan Williams led the way for the homesters with an unbeaten half-century while for the visitors Richard Thorne (85) and Sam Kurtz (34) were

unbeaten.
