FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

As the Costcutter League Division One title race gathers momentum the prospects of protagonists Lampeter Town, St Dogmaels, Llandysul and Newcastle Emlyn will become clearer after top-of-the-table clashes this week.

Long-time leaders Lampeter are five points ahead of Saints with Llandysul a further two points adrift in third and all three have five games remaining while Emlyn, who are 12 points off the top, have nine games left.

The pacesetters suffered a first defeat when going down at St Dogmaels recently but bounced back by beating Llandysul 3-1 in midweek while Saints dropped two points in a 1-1 draw at Crannog and were held by visitors Llandysul on Saturday.

Llandysul host Aberaeron Reserves in midweek while Lampeter are the visitors on Saturday when St Dogmaels will be anxious to keep their hopes alive with victory against Newcastle Emlyn at School Field.

Emlyn have an opportunity to make up leeway when they are away against Crannog tomorrow (Wednesday) and three days later visit Saints.

Once again St Dogmaels must be wondering how they dropped two points against Llandysul after dominating for lengthy periods but failed in front of goal and were denied time and again by visiting goalkeeper John Durbridge.

The big custodian was on top of his game as he pulled off a string of saves that were right out of the top drawer to deny the homesters maximum points.

Central midfielder Adam Williams put the Teifi Estuary villagers ahead when flicking home from a free kick but Scott Thomas squared matters with a 25-yarder into the top corner of the net.

Emlyn sauntered into the semi-final of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies with a 5-1 win over visitors Felinfach at Parc Emlyn.

Ashley Summers came out on top in a one to one with the goalkeeper to nudge the Reds in front and Jake Kelly doubled the advantage before the interval.

Summers netted his second of the game soon after the restart and although the Milkmen reduced the deficit goals by Dion Phillips and Kelly saw Emlyn through.
