Two young sailors from Teifi Boating Club spent a week at the Welsh National Sailing Academy in Pwllheli competing in the Volvo GJW Direct Topper National Championships.

George Sellwood, aged 13 and a pupil at Cardigan Secondary School, and Gruffydd Green, 13, from Ysgol y Preseli, were among the 225 competitors from across the UK who on Pwllheli to sail over six days.

The first three days were the qualification series and in the following three days they raced in gold, silver and bronze fleets. The week proved to be hard with extreme weather conditions.

The fact that no less than 45 boats failed to finish the first day of racing was an indication of just how brutal conditions were with winds of 26 knots and spectacular three-metre waves.

The conditions tested boats and sailors to their limits and but the boys did Wales and their club proud. Gruff came 40th in the silver fleet and George came 28th in the bronze. George also came away with a prize for the oldest boat in the fleet.

Thoughts now turn to the 2017-2018 Topper National Series which starts in Poole this month.
