TORRENTIAL rain in the run-up to the weekend decimated the Costcutter Football League programme with seven of the 12 games postponed.

The Llandysul Park strip was passed fit and the runaway leaders took full advantage with a comfortable 6-0 win over struggling New Quay.

With nine games outstanding the Swallows appear to have matters well under control and if they fail to lift the title for the third time in their history – they were champions of the first competition in 1921-22 and again in 1948-49 – it will be a surprise of monumental proportions.

Goals by Scott Thomas and Adrian Hazelby before the break set the pacesetters on their way and as the Seasiders were totally outplayed during the second period Scott Thomas netted his second of the game and the other marksmen were Terry Maynard, Ian Barratt and Lewis Jones.

Surprisingly knocked out of the Easter Monday League Cup at St Dogmaels the previous week second in the league Lampeter Town kept alive their outside chance of overhauling Llandysul with a gutsy performance in springing a 4-3 win over Dewi Stars at Llanddewi Brefi.

For the visitors Gethin Hunter, Steve Lovell, Gethin Davies and Daniel Harrison were the marksmen while full-of-fight Stars who host Berriew Reserves in the last eight of the J Emrys Morgan Cup this Saturday, netted through front-runner Steffan Owens who bagged a brace, and Ben Biddulph.

In Division Two Maesglas may look at their 2-2 draw with Llanboidy as two points dropped but they had to work hard against a vastly improved visiting side.

With the Blues five players down from the usual squad that starts there were debuts for Ricky Woods Holmes, Callum Plowright and sixteen year old Callum Phillips who all put a good shift in on the day with Woods Holmes claiming the equaliser that saved their blushes.

It was a vital point for Maesglas to maintain their quest for promotion with Pencader and Ffostrasol breathing down the Blues necks.
