Football round-up

DIVISION One champions Cardigan Town and Ffostrasol of the Second Division marched into the last eight of the Easter Monday Costcutter League Cup while Newcastle Emlyn went through after Aberaeron Reserves failed to raise a team for the tie at Square Field.

Pencader competed throughout but although the Carmarthenshire villagers were in contention until the final whistle the visitors held sway for most of the game and were worthy winners.

Midfielder Ben Davies, back in the Town fold after a lengthy absence, was presented with the opportunity to put the visitors ahead during the opening 45 minutes but his stab at the target from 12 yards was turned aside by the goalkeeper.

The Magpies netted both their goals before the break through skipper Iestyn Evans who picked his spot from the edge of the penalty area and the impressive Ewan Jones.

Liam Gordon halved the deficit for the Reds during the second half but the visitors held out.

Division Two pacesetters Ffostrasol sprang a 1-0 win over Dewi Stars of Division One at Troedyrhiw Park after a brave rearguard action during the final quarter.

Dion Davies with a clinical finish nudged Wanderers ahead midway through the first half and the homesters clung on to the lead but were indebted to goalkeeper Jordan Jones for a string of stops including a superb effort in the dying seconds.

Lampeter Town brushed aside New Quay 8-0 in the cup seven days earlier and on Saturday it was a case of déjà vu at Parc Arthur as the high flyers again netted eight without reply in the league.

For the dominant visitors Luke Lovell and Gethin Hunter bagged a brace of goals apiece and the other marksmen were Scott Davies, Gethin Davies and Jason Jones while a hard-pressed Quay defender put through his own goal.

The mid county high-flyers who have triumphed on every occasion since defeat at the hands of league leaders Llandysul on the opening day of the term, face a stern test this weekend when Terry Jones's charges travel to

Powys to take on Kerry of the Spar Mid Wales League Division Two in the Central Wales Cup.

Quay are also in Central Wales action and have another tough assignment when hosting Waterloo Rovers of the JT Hughes Montgomeryshire Amateur League.

Promoted Cilgerran Rovers have been hit by injuries to a crop of key players and on Saturday the situation was compounded by the unavailability of players.

But the Coraclemen dug deep and ground out a 3-2 win over visiting Felinfach at Parc Y Dre. Young striker Louis Harding was the hero of the hour for Neil Morgan's side as he hit a hat-trick.

Crannog are in fifth, the coastal villagers notching success number four from eight outings with a 4-1 win against bottom of the pile Bargod Rangers at Parc Puw.

Dylan Davies, Gary Davies (2) and George Colven were the Crannog marksmen while Hefin Jones replied for Rangers.
