CARDIGAN netball team started the 2016-17 season in style with two wins in the Ceredigion netball league.
The first game was a friendly but competitive contest between two Cardigan teams, the Aces and the Pearls. The Pearls gave the Aces a challenging first half. Defensive players Catrin Reed and Arabella Errington worked hard in the Aces circle, only allowing a two-goal advantage to the Aces at halftime (17-15).
Solid shooting in all areas of the attacking circles by both goal shooters, Sarah Jones (Aces) and Chloe Bowen (Pearls) ensured that both were also nominated players of the match. The final quarter was a tense 12 minutes, ball possession changing constantly and goals following the centre pass with only the one goal difference. Cardigan Aces eventually took the win, final score of 26-25. The developing Pearls team will be one to watch this season.
The second game of the evening was a contest between Cardigan Diamonds and Bont Blades. The Diamonds, defending title holders from last season, got off to a blistering start.
Solid defence from Ellie Rose and Delun Evans left Bont with minimal shooting options. Smooth centre court play ensured fast ball to the attacking end, providing good possession for Cardigan players Zoe Moulster and Chloe Miles.
Possession converted into goals with the reliability and accuracy of experienced shooter Bev Sime, also nominated player of the match.
Final score of 53-9 to Cardigan Diamonds, beginning this season’s campaign with a very convincing performance.
