Football round-up

BELOW PAR performances during the opening weeks of the Costcutter League season are a fading memory for St Dogmaels after Saints completed a win hat-trick and reached round two of the Easter Monday League Cup with a 2-0 win over Aberporth of Division Two.

For the most part it was one-way traffic towards the home goal at Parcllyn where experienced Aberporth goalkeeper Ryan Banks turned in a five-star performance as he saved his team time and again with superb 'keeping.

The custodian worked wonders to deny his former team-mates John Midgley and Marcus Dean before he was finally beaten before the interval.

Teenage Rhys Jones, playing just behind the frontmen, did the trick for the visitors when unleashing a 25-yarder into the top corner giving Banks no chance.

It was the same player who doubled Saints' advantage during the second period when latching on to an Adam Williams through ball, rounding Banks and slotting home.

The Teifi Estuary villagers host St David's College Lampeter of the Second Division in round two and can be fancied to go through to the last eight.

High-flying Lampeter Town also went through to the next stage after turning on the style in thrashing New Quay 8-0 on their opponents' own Parc Arthur stamping ground.

Since the opening day of the term when many considered the North Road men unfortunate to lose against Llandysul they have improved in leaps and bounds and on current form must be feared by the best at this level.

Midfielder Gethin Davies fired Lampeter ahead before the break and as the visitors turned the screw during the second half goals flowed courtesy of vastly experienced striker Mark Rivers who bagged a brace, Davies again, Scott Davies, Szymon Konwiak, Christy Gale and Steve Lovell, the latter a real beauty involving an eight-man move.

On the league front Newcastle Emlyn leapfrogged Cardigan Town into second place behind unbeaten leaders Llandysul with a 5-0 win over their rivals.

Town are obviously nowhere near as good as the past two seasons when plundering a large haul of silverware and although the Magpies made an encouraging start to the campaign there was a feeling among fans that the youngsters would experience difficulty against the leading lights in Division One.

And so it proved at Parc Emlyn where the depleted Magpies were given a bit of a runaround as the Reds dominated for lengthy periods.

Attacking bright spark Ben Thomas bagged a brace of goals for the homesters and the others came via Dion Davies, Mathew Goodman and Jake Harries.

In chalking up a third success with a 3-1 win Cilgerran Rovers compounded the problems of bottom of the pile Bargod Rangers.

As the Coraclemen held sway former Cardigan Town striker and ex-St Dogmaels front-runner Dan Bellis were on target and the third goal was netted by skipper Gary Evans.

Llandysul continued firing on all cylinders as the Swallows swept aside visiting Felinfach 7-1 to make it seven wins on the bounce while netting 37 goals and conceding only five.

Midfield dynamo Adrian Hazelby and tricky winger Scott Thomas both netted twice and the other goals were claimed by Dean Jones, Ben Thomas and front-runner Simon Davies.

The pacesetters have a day off this Saturday before returning to action the following weekend with the return league game against Felinfach.
