UNBEATEN Bargod Rangers took over from Newcastle Emlyn at the head of affairs in Division One of the Costcutter League courtesy of a 4-2 win over full-of-fight Aberporth at Parc Puw.

Rangers emerged victorious for the eighth time in nine outings but no-one is getting carried away in Drefach Felindre as Rangers have to meet champions Cardigan Town and Newcastle Emlyn twice and St Dogmaels once before the end of the campaign.

It was anything but straightforward for the new pacesetters against the Airmen on a heavy strip not conducive to their preferred passing game and more suited to the bigger visitors.

The visitors went ahead during the opening quarter when Mathew Smith cut in from the left and found the net and although Dion Phillips squared matters for Rangers attacking livewire Mathew Newbold regained the lead with a well-taken goal.

That’s how it remained until midway through the second period when leading marksman Robbie Jenkins prodded home from ten yards to bring the scores level for a second time.

A handling offence and a foul inside the penalty area towards the end of the game resulted in Bargod being awarded two penalties and midfielder Sam Skinner obliged from the spot on both occasions.

Basement boys Pencader earned their second point of the term when sharing six goals with Crannog at the Urdd Centre while in Division Two long-time leaders Cilgerran Rovers extended their advantage to seven points with an 8-0 win over SDUC at Parc y Dre on Sunday.
