The season is hardly winding down on a high note for local clubs as Newcastle Emlyn crashed again when going down 19-0 at Maesteg in Division Two West and Cardigan lost 22-5 against Tycroes in a Division Three West game in the Amman Valley.

When Emlyn and Maesteg clashed at Ddol Wyber back in November the Red and Whites emerged 20-5 winners but it was a different story in the Llynfi Valley where the Old Parish adapted better to downright miserable conditions.

With heavy rain throughout and gluepot underfoot conditions both teams were to be congratulated on endeavouring to serve up entertaining fare.

Although the homesters deserved the victory Emlyn were in contention until the final quarter when home right-winger Lewis Morgan crossed for a third try converted by fullback John Phillips.

It was 12-0 after the opening 40 minutes, the home points coming from tries by hooker Aaron Shakeshaft and No. 8 Karl Hocking, the latter converted by Phillips.

Cardigan sprang a 38-26 win over Tycroes at King George V Playing Field in November but couldn’t complete a double despite a spirited performance.

Fullback Carwyn Richards nudged the homesters ahead with a penalty after seven minutes and the lead was increased before half time when lock John James powered over for an unconverted try.

Richards burst through for a try which he converted midway through the second period but the Cardis bounced back with a try by outstanding player/coach Colin Davies.

Tycroes killed off the contest in the closing stages when loose-head prop Tristan Morgan went in for a try converted by Richards.

The Division One West game between Crymych and Llangennech was postponed because of the waterlogged stage of the Parc Lloyd Thomas strip.
