Rugby round-up

Putting the previous Saturday’s defeat at the hands of basement boys Ammanford behind them Crymych bounced back with a 19-3 win over Carmarthen Athletic at Parc Lloyd Thomas.

When the rivals clashed in Johnstown on the opening day of the term the Athletic emerged 20-8 winners but it was a different story this time around as the Preselimen held sway.

The north Pembrokeshire villagers led 8-3 at the interval and playing into the wind during the second period notched two further tries while denying their opponents any clear-cut chances.

Outside half Jack Wilson gave the Athletic the lead with a penalty but a try by Nick Bevan converted scrum-half Rhys Davies put Crymych in the ascendancy before half time.

Hooker Carwyn Rees and centre Elgan Vittle crossed for tries after the break and replacement Dyfan Dafydd landed one conversion.

In a fine all-round Crymych team performance No. 8 Alex Humphreys and hooker Rees were to the fore throughout.

This Saturday the Preselimen visit mid table Cwmllynfell.

Cardigan gave it their best shot against Division Three West high-flyers Gorseinon but couldn’t prevent the visitors merging 22-8 winners at King George V Playing Field.

Centre Jack Lynch gave the Cardis the ideal start with a try after four minutes and outside half Iestyn Crompton increased the home tally with a penalty.

But it was Gorseinon who led 14-o8 at half time via tries by impressive No. 8 Sean Heycock and fullback Andrew Colwill, the latter converting the two scores.

The homesters were unable to convert pressure into points during the second period and fell further behind when loose head prop Geraint James crossed for a third ty and Colwill landed a penalty to complete the double over their opponents. The victory took Gorseinon to the top of the table but second-placed Penclawdd have two games in hand.
