CARDIGAN Amateur Boxing Club have unveiled plans for what will be the first boxing show ever staged at Newcastle Emlyn at the end of the month.
Some of the area’s best young boxers are due to appear at Newcastle Emlyn rugby club on Friday, February 28, in a tournament that is already creating great interest in the market town.
Announcing the show, Cardigan ABC coach Guy Croft said: “It should be quite an exciting night bearing in mind boxing has never come to Emlyn before – there’s a lot of interest in the area and we have a strong tradition of boys coming from the Newcastle Emlyn area to box for us.”
Among Cardigan boxers appearing will be British Youth semi-finalist Peter Price, Welsh schoolboy finalist Tom Morris, Cardigan light-heavyweight Dan Butler and Eglwswrw teenager Emyr Simmons, plus the exciting Croft twins – 12-year-olds Ioan and Garan – from Crymych, who have caused quite an impact on the Welsh boxing scene since their debuts two years ago.
Cardigan ABC chairman Mike Lewis said: “As far as we can tell, this will be the first boxing in Newcastle Emlyn since dear old Ron Taylor brought his boxing booth to the town with the annual fair back in the day.
“Emlyn’s new club-house is a first-rate venue which we know will be appreciated by spectators and competitors alike.”
Newcastle Emlyn RFC manager Jason Ludgate said the club had strong links with the boxing club.
“Mike Jones, our first-team scrum-half, boxed for Cardigan and Kevin, his dad, who is now our first-team manager, was a member there for a number of seasons,” he said.
“We’re all looking forward to a great night on February 28.”
Entry, priced at £10, will be on the door on the night (£5 for kids).
