HAVERFORDWEST and St Davids Air Cadets is calling for new members to join the group, and swell the ranks of the marching band.

The 948 Haverfordwest and City of St Davids Air Cadet squadron are searching for people between the ages of 12 and 17 to join their numbers.

Squadron Commander Andrew Clark said joining is a good way to make new friends.

“We have cadets from five different schools there and if they hadn’t been in cadets they wouldn’t know each other,” he said.

Members of the squadron come from across Pembrokeshire, including Milford Haven, Pembroke, and Newport, as well as St Davids and Haverfordwest.

New members are encouraged to join the band when they enrol, and have the opportunity to play drums, glockenspiel or bell lyre, and cymbals.

“If a young person comes into the squadron and cannot play anything, we will teach them. We have been handing down from one generation to the next how to play these drums,” added Mr Clark.

The marching band attends events both locally and nationally, taking part in the mayor-making and beating of the bounds ceremonies in Haverfordwest, and the dragon parade in St Davids, as well as the Lord Mayor’s Show in London.

In 2018, they also plan to join other cadet branches in Swansea to take part in a day of festivities to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RAF.
