A top architect has been chosen to undertake an all important feasibility study on Cardigan Castle.

Bristol-based Niall Phillips - who has worked on a string of award-winning projects throughout the UK - was selected by Cadwgan Trust after a lengthy interviewing and tender process.

Niall Phillips Architects specialises in the conservation and imaginative re-use of historic buildings and the design of new buildings in historically sensitive areas.

Cadwgan Trust is hoping that some of Niall Phillips' magic will rub off on Cardigan Castle.

The highly regarded firm has worked on several lottery-funded projects and managed to steer many "unsaveable" buildings to a successful future.

One of its recent projects was a Victorian coffin factory in Birmingham which, like Cardigan Castle, featured on the BBC2 programme Restoration.

Cadwgan chairman Jann Tucker said: "We are delighted that Niall is coming on board. He is the best in his field and has been highly recommended by national organisations.

"We are confident that his study will act as a launchpad for Cardigan Castle to access the big lottery grants." The Trust is now completing its funding package for the study which has been kicked off with a grant from Cardigan Town Council.

The WDA, Wales Tourist Board and castle owners Ceredigion County Council are being asked for contributions as well as the Architectural Heritage Fund.

"Once we have the funding in place we expect Niall to start work as soon as possible," said Mrs Tucker. "It will be a very exciting summer."
