A local man who lived through the horror of the terrorist attack on New York's World Trade Centre flew back to the city yesterday (Tuesday)following a fleeting visit to the UK.

David Varney, 41, the son of Mrs Doreen Varney, 12 Maes Morfa, Newport, had joined relatives at the weekend for a family wedding in Bedford.

David Varney works for Sullivan and Cromwell, an international legal firm in New York's Wall Street - four blocks from Ground Zero.

He actually saw the second plane smash into the World Trade Centre - and for eight terrifying hours was unable to contact his family to tell them he was alive.

The Tivy-Side spoke to David at his Brooklyn home yesterday.

"New York is on high alert but life is pretty well going on as normal," he said.

"The impact of September 11 is something you cannot put into words.

"Ground Zero is now like a shrine. People are just moved beyond words by what is left."
