Cambria Archaeology's excavation at Green Villas cottages, Cardigan has been a resounding success according to project manager Nigel Page.

The dig has been carried out as part of Ceredigion County Council's project to restore Castle Green mansion and to open Cardigan Castle to the public.

Mr Page said: "Our four week excavation has revealed part of a substantial medieval wall. This wall is definitely part of the medieval castle and the best explanation we can give on the basis of the evidence that we now have is that it is part of the castle entrance - possibly part of the gatehouse itself.

"The long-lost castle gatehouse is shown on the town seal as a massive three-storey structure and it is exciting to think that we appear to have uncovered what survives of it.

"This is the first time medieval masonry has been uncovered on this side of the castle and we hope that this small excavation will prove to be the first step in reconstructing the medieval topography of this part of Cardigan."

Mr Page also praised the local authority for its role.

"The excavation shows the commitment of Ceredigion County Council to the investigation and promotion of Cardigan castle, which is very much a sleeping giant with a fascinating and diverse history. As an archaeologist I am aware of the huge interest that exists in the local community and the very genuine hope that the castle and Castle Green mansion will once again form a key part of Cardigan," he said.
