Division Two (West): Vardre 18 Cardigan 32

Cardigan showed great spirit and team-work to fight back from an 18-10 deficit to win at Vardre, never an easy place to secure league points against a big home side and partisan set of supporters, writes Bill Carne.

Outside half Gareth Mason was the toast of the Cardigan faithful as he amassed 22 points from two tries, two conversions and a penalty, showing that he has really adapted to his change of position from last season's scrum half slot. Duncan Lewis also maintained his spurt of good form as the winger grabbed another try brace but coach Derek Burton will have been delighted by the all-round display of his team since they played well from full back Gary Souter to veteran prop Eurfyl Davies.

Cardigan showed their capabilities by opening their account as early as the fifth minute when a Vardre movement near half-way broke down under pressure from Mark Hughes and Steve Liptrot so that the ball went loose and Mason was perfectly placed to round off a kick and chase with his first try that he also converted.

Vardre came back with a 10th-minute penalty from fly half Phil Evans and he also added a second three-pointer shortly after Mason had slotted a similar kick for the Cardis - a 10-6 scoreline in Cardigan's favour just about reflecting the balance of power in the opening half.

But things looked black for the visitors when Vardre scored a good try by centre Stuart Pardoe, converted by Evans, who also scored an unconverted try as he was driven over the line by his pack.

Last season the Cardis might have capitulated with a 10-18 deficit and 20 minutes left but they rolled up their sleeves as Chris Jones, Colin Davies, Eurfyl Davies, Richard Jones and Richard Smith built up a head of steam, with Dyfed James and Mason ever-ready to use Dylan Rees and Barry John to run at the opposition. A run out of defence by Souter set up the platform for Duncan Lewis to win the race to the corner from a kick and chase - and the Teifisiders took the lead when Chris Jones made the initial break and Duncan Lewis sped over in the corner.

Gareth Mason added the conversion as a bonus and then contributed a cracking second try of his own as he jinked and dummied his way from half way to the posts, adding the extras and notching a late penalty to set the seal on a cracking victory for Cardigan, who now entertain a strong Aberavon Quins at the King George V Ground this Saturday, hopefully with a big crowd to cheer Barry John and his team to another success!
