1National League Division Two (West): Cardigan 17 points Waunarlwydd 12 points

2Cardigan finally returned to winning ways with this hard-fought success against a Waunarlwydd side which was eager to go away from the King George Vth ground with the three league points - but reckoned without the commitment shown by the entire Cardigan side in what club secretary Graham Rees later described as a 'cracking win which showed what the boys can do.'

3Sec Lloyd was right because Cardigan played some good rugby to open up a 10-point lead and after conceding a soft try knuckled down again to keep ahead throughout the second half, showing top defence during a tense 10 minutes added on for injury after Waun had scored a come-back try in the 78th minute. The Cardis took the lead after 10 minutes when a forward drive featuring Eurfyl Davies, Chris Jones, Mark Hughes and Llyr Evans resulted in young lock Colin Davies powering away on the narrow side to score after a 25 meter run to the corner.

4Although Waun came back at them they were unable to breach the home defence and after 35 minutes Cardigan doubled their lead from a scrum near the 22 where Chris Jones picked up and after sending lively flanker Steve Liptrot away was able to get up in support and crash through for another unconverted try.

But Cardigan gifted Waun seven points just before the break when a midfield move broke down and visiting winger Steve Crane was allowed to pick up and cross for a try, which was converted by fly half Lee Jones to leave Cardigan 10-7 ahead at the interval when they might have expected more from their whole-hearted efforts.

5The second half was hard-fought and although both sides went close there was no further scoring until the 76th minute, when Cardigan seemed to have made the game safe as Chris Jones set up a ruck from which play was transferred wide by halves Dyfed James and Gareth Mason for winger Huw Davies to claim his second excellent try in as many matches, Mason adding the extra points as a bonus.

But just when the home supporters were thinking of a comfortable win, persistent Waun pressure saw the ball worked blind and a neat grubber kick allowed full back Paul Davies to win the touch down for an unconverted try.

It created a nerve-jangling last 10 minutes but with Dylan Rees and skipper Barry John organising the cover alongside their back row, Cardigan were able to claim a first win of the season, to the evident delight of coach Derek Burton!
