Division Two (West): Felinfoel 41 points Cardigan 7 points

Cardigan found it hard going against an experienced Felinfoel side which included Jason Davies and Martin Rees at half back, both playing key roles and sharing 23 points.

But at least the Cardis are up and running and can hopefully add to their squad in forthcoming weeks. They were only 14-7 adrift at the break and it was only in the last 10 minutes that they conceded another 14 points to give the final scoreline a rather flattering look for Felinfoel.

The visitors included a new full back in Mike Rattenbury, just moved into the area, and youth wingers Huw Davies and Calfryn Bladen, with Davies claiming the sole Cardigan try when he was put away by Barry John and Eurig Lloyd, the Cardigan forwards doing well to recycle possession from a ruck so that Davies was given a little space before doing really well to reach the line. His try was converted by Gareth Mason, who switched to outside half so that new recruit Dyfed James could play at scrum half.

But by then Cardigan were already 14 points in arrears because home scrum half Rees had crossed for two tries which Davies converted, the first from a speedily-taken penalty and the other from a scrum 10 metres out where No 8 Ian Morris picked up and gave the No 9 the room he required to squirm over the line.

Cardigan remained in contention for the rest of the half and a seven-point interval deficit was not an insurmountable lead if they could raise the tempo in the second half. But they were rocked back by an early try from winger Paul Picton-Jones, which Davies converted before adding two penalties as they built up their forward momentum despite the genuine efforts of Eurfyl Davies, his replacement Richard Jones, Aled Harries and Richard Smith in the close exchanges. Steve Liptrot, Mark Hughes and Chris Jones also covered well but Felinfoel added two more tries by centres Steve Butchers and Tony Richards, who had switched to fly half and converted both scores to send Cardigan home with a defeat which didn't really do justice to the part they played in the game.

Cardigan are at home to Waunarlwydd this Saturday at the King George V Ground.
