Division Two (West): Cardigan 23 Pencoed 19

Cardigan gained a deserved victory over a strong Pencoed side at the King George V Ground in what club secretary Graham Rees later described as a "cracking match, one of the best we've seen for a few seasons here because both teams tried to run the ball."

The Cardis scored four good first-half tries with the breeze at their backs, two of them right on the interval, and also played well after the break so that Pencoed could only add to their early unconverted try when it was too late to snatch a come-back win.

Secretary Rees was right in praising both sides because they tried to play running rugby from the outset, with Pencoed serving notice of their capabilities in an early attack, which saw full back Gareth David cut through for a try, which he was unable to convert into the elements.

But Cardigan halves Gareth Mason and Dyfed James were soon influencing matters as their pack won quality possession, with prop Richard Jones earning the man of the match tag for his play alongside Aled Harries and the venerable Eurfyl Davies. Llyr Evans and Colin Davies grafted well in the close exchanges and the back row of Steve Liptrot, Mark Hughes and Chris Jones was always busy and eager to win 50/50 ball on the ground. Cardigan drew level when Pencoed tried to run the ball out of defence but a dropped pass allowed winger Duncan Lewes to pouch the ball in a flash and speed 15 metres to the line. Gareth Mason was unable to convert but added three points when Cardigan were awarded a penalty for offside.

Mason was again involved shortly afterwards as skipper Barry John made ground from a scrum and after the Cardigan pack secured possession it was Mason who dashed over for an unconverted try. A Barry John break up the blind side allowed Duncan Lewes to grab his second corner try and right on the break a quickly-taken penalty allowed Mark Hughes to make the yardage before Chris Jones was on hand to take the scoring pass as reward for his support play.

Pencoed tried to kick deep with the wind at their backs but home full back Gary Souter was well placed alongside covering wings Lewis and Huw Davies to run the ball back, with Barry John and Dylan Rees always posing a threat on the counter. With the pack also getting through a lot of work the Teifisiders remained in control throughout a score-less third quarter and it was only towards the end that Pencoed grabbed tries from Arwyn Roberts and Gareth Hurley, both converted by David, to give them a tiny sniff of success. But Cardigan were able to maintain their shape well at the back and were good value for this second win in four league games, with replacements Owen Jones and Daniel Rogers also working well up front. Cardigan were sponsored by Castell Howell Foods.
