Ceredigion’s Elin Jones AM has welcomed confirmation that the National Library of Wales will receive £2m in funding from the Assembly Government’s Strategic Capital Investment Fund.
Plaid Cymru’s Minister for Heritage, Alun Ffred Jones AM, announced this week that the funding was specifically being made available to digitise periodicals relating to Wales so that they can be accessed via the internet.
Following the Heritage Minister’s announcement, Plaid Cymru’s Elin Jones AM said: "This substantial investment – which will allow the National Library to expand its activities in the online world – demonstrates the Assembly Government’s commitment to the future of this national institution and developing its activities to improve access from throughout Wales to its assets.
"We are living in an age where access to information via the internet is becoming increasingly important. This digitisation project will ensure that people from throughout Wales and the whole of the world are able to view a selection of Welsh periodicals online, in addition to viewing them at the Library itself in Aberystwyth.
"Of course, this development may also well lead to greater visitor numbers being attracted to the National Library and to Aberystwyth after being given a taste online of what’s available to see at the institution".
