PUPILS at a Welsh-medium primary school enjoy learning thanks to an “inclusive and interesting curriculum”, inspectors have found.

Estyn inspectors visited Ysgol Felinfach in December, and a report of their findings has now been published.

The school is set to merge with Dihewyd Primary School and Ciliau Parc Primary School to create the new £16.3 million Ysgol Dyffryn Aeron.

The inspectors said that the school – which teaches children between the ages of four and eleven  – is a “happy, familial and welcoming community”.

“Pupils have a positive attitude to their work and make sound progress from their starting points,” the report read.

“Most pupils develop their numeracy, digital, creative and physical skills well and their work is displayed attractively and celebrated around the school.”

However, inspectors said pupils at the top of the school could improve their reading skills, which also “has an effect on their ability to write with sufficient richness and accuracy in a variety of genres”.

The report noted that teachers had “a sound understanding of each pupil’s attainment” and provided “good oral feedback” to support their learning. However it said that written comments in the children’s books “do not provide pupils with clear enough guidance on how to improve their work”.

Inspectors praised the teaching at the school and how it engages pupils.

“Teachers work well with schools in the area to plan an inclusive and interesting curriculum that gives full consideration to pupils’ interests,” the report said.

“Most pupils respond with curiosity and motivation and show enjoyment in their learning.”

It continued: “Staff work together effectively to provide an inclusive and friendly ethos where pupils are polite and respectful.

“The school is a safe place and teachers and pupils undertake the role of caring for each other diligently.

“Staff foster a warm and supportive working relationship with pupils and identify pupils’ needs well.

“The school is led effectively. On the whole, leaders identify aspects of the school’s work that are in need of improvement and the steps needed to realise this.

“Nearly all pupils enjoy being at Ysgol Felinfach, behave exceptionally well and treat each other, staff and visitors with respect.”

The school has been set targets of improve the reading and writing skills of the older pupils, ensuring that teachers’ feedback supports pupils to improve their work, and to sharpen quality assurance procedures to ensure improvements in teaching and learning.
