ANN Bowen Morgan has won the Lampeter Ward by-election for Plaid Cymru after polling 39.2 per cent of the vote.

Ms Morgan took the seat with 291 votes – a winning margin of just 23 over Sandra Louise Jervis (Welsh Liberal Democrats) who was second with 268.

Former Welsh Labour Parliamentary Candidate Dinah Mulholland was third with 160 votes, with Lee Cowles (Independent) taking 18 votes.

The turnout for the election was 42 per cent and Ms Morgan will begin her role as a member of Ceredigion County Council during the next few days.

The position became vacant following the sudden death of Welsh Labour’s Hag Harris, who passed away in May.
