WOULD you like to see Brioude Gardens improved? The popular public space outside the castle entrance in Cardigan is showing signs of wear and tear and plans are afoot to put together a grant bid to revamp the area.

The gardens are now looked after by Cardigan Castle, which has the area on a long lease from the county council.

Castle garden volunteers – including a group of young people from Clynfwy Care Farm at Abercych – have been keeping the area clean and tidy but it needs improvements.

Brick facings are loose, seats are beginning to rot, the beds have unsightly electric cables and a tree planted in the middle of the gardens is making the ground uneven. The planters are too shallow and plants struggle to survive a season.

Now the castle, in partnership with the town council and Brioude twinning committee, is putting together a grant bid to fund improvements.

And that’s where the community comes in.

“It’s important for us to show funders that the community care about the gardens, that they use it and want to see it improved,” said castle facilities officer Sue Lewis.

“We welcome any comments or support so that we can show funders that Cardigan cares about this public space.”

A survey is being carried out with the following questions:

  • How often do you use the gardens?

  • Do you think they are an asset for the town?

  • What improvements would you like to see?

You can send your replies direct to the castle at info@cardigancastle.com or just drop in and complete a survey form at the castle reception.
