NEWCASTLE Emlyn PCSO Jeff Kedward certainly had a swine of a job on his hands as he tried to round up a runaway porker.

‘Thumbelina’ the pig had escaped from her pen and was running loose in Drefach Felindre earlier this week and it was left to PCSO Kedward to bring home the bacon and recapture the escapee.

“I was flagged down by a man in a van who had already called the police as he was worried the pig might cause an accident,” said Jeff.

“I have had a far for many years and am used to dealing with cattle and sheep but this was something different altogether.

“Myself and four members of the public managed to corner her a few times but she was not having any of it and kept making another break for it. At one point I nearly end up on top of her and riding across the street!

“It must have looked like a scene from a 10-pin bowling alley as people scattered and it must have looked hilarious but if she hit you it would not be too funny as she must have weighed more than 80kg.”

Thumbelina was finally cornered after about a half-hour chase near the Premier store in the village.

“I have seen people use boards to block the pig’s vision and move them. I parked up the van and got cardboard boxes to funnel her towards the van with Jaffa cakes,” added Jeff.

“Two people grabbed her front legs and I grabbed her back end and managed to push her into the van with a bit of squealing but once in there she was quite happy and returned her home.

“A couple of my colleagues arrived just as we got her in the van and I think everyone has now run out of pig and bacon jokes!”
