ROADWORKS in Newcastle Emlyn are causing ‘chaos’ in the town.

Work is currently being carried out by BT on the main A484 road at Ebenezer Street, bringing the town grinding to a halt.

The situation was so bad earlier in the week that it prompted the head teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn to fire off a letter to Newcastle Emlyn Town Council expressing his concerns.

Hugh Thomas said that the school had not been told about the works and that buses picking up pupils had been half an hour late and that there had been no chance to make contingency plans.

He said he had been inundated with complaints from parents.

Cllr Hazel Evans, who is also a representative on Carmarthenshire County Council, said there was little the highways authority could do when it came to alleviating the problems as utility companies were allowed to carry out the work.

“It has been right outside my front door and the traffic lights have caused chaos. Traffic has been right through the town,” she said.

“Times around the school run are often bad enough and it’s chaos at the best of times but this has just made it worse.”

Cllr Maureen Webley feared the snarl-ups would only get worse with the work approaching the Porth Street junction.

“I fear it’s going to be really bad. I don’t think people doing the work have thought it through and there’s no way for people to avoid it.”

And there’s no early end in sight to the chaos, with the work scheduled to continue until next Friday (September 29).
