A STUDENT from Llangranogg is one of the first to benefit from the Community Leadership Academy scheme set up in Ceredigion.

The project was set up last year by Cered, the Ceredigion Language Initiative, and Theatr Felinfach to provide an intensive learning course for young Welsh-speaking adults with the aim of creating young leaders in the county's communities.

The latest Community Leadership Academy in Ceredigion will be starting in October and the closing date for applications is 22 September.

Caryl Griffiths is one student who has benefited from the course. Her project is to launch a local children's choir in the Llangrannog area, called Côr Plant y Bryn.

She said, "Upon returning after spending three years of studying music and working as a teaching assistant in London, what stood out for me was the incredible opportunities that the children receive on their doorstep.

“I feel, although I had a great education and opportunities during my childhood in Penbryn, I had to travel at least half an hour to receive lessons. This was the main reason for my application for this course - I want to make a difference in my neighbourhood.

“After receiving support and essential information from the several experienced mentors who help us along our journey on the course, I am very excited to be able to say that I can reach my goal.

“The biggest thing I've learned from the whole experience is that you shouldn’t wait for anyone else to make the difference you want to see in your neighbourhood, never think you are too young. Make the difference yourself – go for it! "

Cered manager Lynsey Thomas, said, "The course offers training sessions during the year and all students are allocated a personal mentor. The students have the opportunity to put their knowledge, skills and new attitudes to work by developing a local enterprise or project.”

The Academy is now looking for young people aged between 18-30, who live in Ceredigion, to apply. Training will consist of five day sessions between October 2017 and May 2018, and students will be expected to attend the five day schedules together with completing a community project.
