CEREDIGION MP Ben Lake has today vowed to fight the closure of the last bank in Llandysul.

Barclays has announced today (Friday) that it intends to close its Wind Street branch in Llandysul on Friday, November 17.

Mr Lake said that this was yet another example of rural areas "bearing the brunt of cuts and closures" and said that he will be contacting Barclays urging them to reconsider their decision.

"I'm very disappointed that Barclays Bank has earmarked their Llandysul branch for closure,” said Mr Lake.

"Even though technology is moving forward and more people are banking online, we still need our high street banks which are a vital asset for our local businesses.

"Llandysul residents need to be able to access their banks in person, especially when you consider that poor broadband provision means that online banking is difficult for many.

"This Barclays branch is the last bank in the town. We cannot have a situation in which our rural communities are essentially being closed down, leading to more people - especially the younger generation - moving away.

"I will be writing to Barclays strongly urging them to reconsider this decision and to show greater respect towards the loyalty of their customers in Ceredigion."
