AN elderly woman suffered serious injuries after falling on an ‘uneven and dangerous’ pavement in Cardigan.

Sandra Parry Morgan, 66, from Carreg Wen, neat Llechryd, badly broke her left foot in two places and also fractured her right foot following the fall in William Street.

The incident happened just over a month ago and Mrs Parry Morgan, who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, has since been confined to one room in her home. She is unable to get upstairs and is sleeping in a reclining chair.

She is now keen to highlight the problem after reading in last week’s Tivyside Advertiser about how the state of William Street and the problems for disabled access had been raised at a meeting of Cardigan Town Council.

The area where she fell was taped off by Ceredigion County Council officials.

Mrs Parry Morgan said: “I had been to the doctors and was heading back to my car. I was walking up the road but there was a car coming and I had to go on to the pavement.

“I had not got far when over I went on a piece of uneven tarmac. Other people have said to me ‘what were you doing on the pavement, it is so dangerous?’

“I am normally so careful I could not believe it. I had a hip replacement last year and take great care.”

Mrs Parry Morgan had to wait for nearly an hour before an ambulance arrived and took her to Glangwilli Hospital, where her injuries were confirmed. She has a plaster on her left foot and a boot on her right and is not able to put any weight on them.

She faces at least two more weeks in plaster and possibly more if the breaks have not healed properly and is having to rely on her husband David, a self-employed painter and decorator, and friends and neighbours for everything.

“My husband is having to take time off work but my friends and neighbours are fantastic and have rallied around and I cannot thank them enough,” she added.

A Ceredigion council spokesman said: "Mrs Morgan has twice contacted the Council in relation to the reported incident in William Street, Cardigan. An engineer and a highway inspector visited William Street and any defects present were identified and recorded. The area was coned off and any necessary remedial works were subsequently carried out."
