THE revival of Cardigan Carnival is well under way following Mayor Richard Jones’ inauguration announcement of his plans to celebrate the spirit of community in the town.

Plans to bring back Cardigan’s carnival tradition as a centre-point of community events are being drawn up and an enthusiastic committee has been meeting to formulate ideas.

The Carnival will take place on the August 5 with a procession of floats making their way from Station Road to the High Street where they will be met by a parade of walkers in fancy dress at Brioude Gardens.

The procession will then continue up through the town to Parc y Rifle/King George V Playing Field where the Carnival Queen and King will be crowned and judging of fancy dress competitions will take place.

Prizes will be awarded for best dressed adult float, best dressed children’s float, best fancy dress (adult), best fancy dress (senior), best fancy dress (junior), best adult group and best children’s group.

There will also be stalls, a tug of war competition and children’s races. The parade will commence at 1.30pm and activities on the field will continue until 6.30pm.

Cardigan has not held a Carnival since 2000. While themes of parades of the past have included the Millennium Bug in 1999 and Europe in 1992, the theme for this year’s parade is open.

To get in the carnival mood, the organizing committee has been inviting present and former Cardigan residents to share their pictures and memories from carnivals of the past.

If you have any images you’d like to share you can post them to the Cardigan Carnival Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/CardiganCarnival/?fref=ts

The carnival will be the culmination of a series of festive activities that will start with a disco at the swimming pool hall on the July 21, where the Carnival Queen, King and attendants will be chosen.

Other events will include Castle Bingo in the Pavilion at Cardigan Castle, a quiz at Pendre Art Café, a Spot the Mistake Treasure Hunt focused on the High Street and a team beer barrel carrying relay race sponsored by Mantle Brewery.
