TEN cyclists got on their bikes for a sponsored ten-mile ride to Poppit Sands to raise money for children's disabled skiing.

The cycle ride raised £300 in aid of SKIS (Special Kids in Skis) - a club for disabled children that meets once a month at the Urdd Ski Centre in Llangrannog.

The group enables wheelchair users and children with mobility difficulties to experience the thrill of skiing.

The club was started more than ten years ago by Alex Elsaesser whose daughter Alissa has Down’s syndrome.

Alex said: “When we started we had to find funds to buy bespoke sit skis that are made in the USA and cost over £1600.

"Thankfully a Disability Sports Officer was then appointed to each county.

"They helped us obtain grants from Sport Wales and Children in Need.

"Gemma Cutter, who works to facilitate disability sports and inclusion of the disabled in local sport clubs has provided invaluable help especially with the Community Chest Sport grants funded by the National Lottery.

“ Our daughter Alissa is now a competent skier who has enjoyed numerous ski trips on real snow.

"The dry ski slope provides an excellent opportunity to learn to ski.”

The club always welcomes new people to have a go. SKIS is a member of the Ceredigion Sports Council.

There are also monthly sessions run by another sister club (Ice Cool Kids) at the Ski Centre at Pembrey Country Park.
