The National Library of Wales was the venue for a very special screening of work by a talented group of young filmmakers recently.

Coleg Ceredigion held a special showcase of films produced by its Media Production students consisting of music videos, stop motion, graphics and 3D modelling adverts and documentaries.

Among the films featured was Evie Thomas’ short documentary about Lyssia Chung: an 8 years old Plascrug school pupil who was born severely hard of hearing. Narrated by Lyssia herself, the film takes an affectionate look at her everyday life and celebrates childhood and its all-encompassing charm.

The screening also featured music videos including one for local band Pretty Visitors, who performed at this year’s MIdMad festival along with Hedd Morris’ music video, entitled ‘S?n Clo’, for prominent Welsh musician Gwilym Morus and Thomas Middlehurst’s music video ‘Shut Eye’, both of which were shortlisted for best music video at the ZOOM International Film Festival awards.

Among the documentaries were Osian Pearson’s documentary for the ‘Hafod’ estate, in Cwmystwyth near Aberystwyth, which was commissioned by the Hafod Trust and successfully won first prize for the “Best film or Animation” category at the Urdd national Eisteddfod as well as being shortlisted for the ‘best edit’ category at this year’s ZOOM International Youth Film Festival awards.

“The screening was a great success - a true celebration of the students' work. I am extremely proud with what they have achieved,” enthused Sophia Behraki, College Ceredigion lecturer in Media Production.

“The standard of work is very high and the variety of techniques and skills that each student had to master in order to produce these films is impressive. Everybody in the Media Department have worked extremely hard over the past two years to get the students ready for their next steps. The body of work screened is evidence of the fact that the students are now ready to move on to either a University Degree course or into the industry.”

Jacqui Weatherburn, Principal at Coleg Ceredigion, noted: “The diverse range of techniques and styles, all produced to an excellent standard, was the hallmark of the event on Wednesday. All the students on the Media Production Course, had the opportunity to showcase a range of their work to a delighted audience. I am extremely proud that, with the skilful guidance of our lecturing and technical staff, we have again this year seen our students express their creativity within their chosen medium of film. I wish them all enormous success on their future paths.”
