One man has set himself two challenges of a lifetime this summer to raise money for the Miscarriages Association.

Richard Cheney will be cycling the 220 mile journey from Portsmouth to Newcastle Emlyn, then later in the summer he will be running the length of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path which is almost 190 miles.

Richard explains: "I wanted to do something to help those around me who have suffered the unimaginable heartache of losing a baby prematurely.

"I can't imagine how hard it must be when something like that happens, but do know that the miscarriage association are a valuable aid to those who go through such an ordeal."

The first challenge will be on June 19, where he will start off at 4am from Portsmouth.

He said: “The plan is to cycle the entire route in one go and if all goes to plan finish at 8pm.

“By the time I leave I will have completed nearly three months of training; riding around 1200 miles on the road and eight hours on the spin bike

“I am in the middle of my “month of hell” at the moment, which sees me cycle 80-110 miles on a Monday, around 50 miles on a Wednesday and an hour of spinning at 90-100rpm on a Friday. Followed possibly by a sports massage.”

The coast path challenge will be in early September.

With around 35,000 feet of ascent and over nearly 190 mile this will be a challenge for both Richards physical and mental strength.

Richard explains: “As I not only need to run the equivalent of seven marathons in seven days, off road, whilst wearing minimalist footwear and even going barefoot. I will have to battle the mental fatigue that comes with doing multiple day challenges.”

He will be going barefoot because he trained as a barefoot running instructor and having just helped train a friend to complete the London marathon barefoot,he's decided to attempt this challenge using only the minimal footwear that his training provider ‘Vivobarefoot’ endorse.

Richard has been fortunate to secure sponsorship through them in the form of brand new trail running shoes and technical T-shirt.

And he also hopes to possibly set a new Guinness world record in the process of this challenge.

Richard is also looking for more sponsorship in the form of cycle clothing, running clothing, nutrition, bike maintenance and massages.

In total so far he has received sponsorship from vivobarefoot.com (shoes and T-shirt) Mat Williams- Emlyn car valeting (cycle maintenance), Mike the biz (clothing embroidery) and a few others.
