Police are reminding homeowners in Ceredigion to protect their heating oil supplies to prevent any theft from storage tanks.

“Homeowners can take a few simple steps to prevent being a victim of theft,” said Inspector Rose Ann Lloyd. “Taking measures will help make life more difficult for would-be-thieves and also ensures your tank stays topped-up.

Householders are advised to check oil levels frequently and keep them low where possible.

Anti-cut close-shackled padlock can be fitted to steel tanks and outside security lighting with movement sensors can be a deterrent.

Residents with plastic tanks are asked to consider erecting fencing around the tank with one end hinged and locked for filling purposes. The fencing should be fixed to solid posts and should be set off the tank aprox 12 inches on all sides. The same should be fixed to the top as well.

Anyone aware of people going out with drums and pipes to steal fuel is asked to contact either their local police station on 101 or give CrimeStoppers a call on 0800 555 111.
