Ceredigion MP Mark Williams has expressed concern over changes in EU food labelling laws which may affect traders at farmers markets, including food markets across Ceredigion.

The rules come with the introduction of EC Regulation 1169/2011 Food Information to Consumers. In particular there is concern from small producers about mandatory allergen labelling, which many undertake anyway, and the need to give a nutritional declaration on nearly all pre-packed foods.

Mr Williams said: “There seems to be an assumption that all businesses are operating at the same level, and are able to adapt on a cost neutral basis. That is not the case. I compare some of our big food producers to the individual food producers at our food festivals, shows and markets. There are a key part of Ceredigion life, and I have received representations from several of them, from Llandysul Country Market, Tregaron Country Market and Aberystwyth Farmers Market.

“I am in no doubt that purchasing cakes, jams and savouries from familiar local faces with the shortest possible supply chain should be treated differently to big business with complex food chains.

“While there is much in the regulation to be welcomed, some of its provisions could put our much valued local small food producers in jeopardy. It seems to be well intentioned, but with potentially unforeseen implications, is excessive. I shall be pursuing this issue further in Parliament.”
