A drink driver returned to repair a garden wall he had damaged on his way home from a pub, a court has heard.

Glen O’Hanlon, aged 46, of Dan yr Onen, Boncath, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit and failing to stop after an accident, when he appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on Wednesday.

The court was told that a Llechryd resident was in his garden at around 9.30pm on December 14, when he saw a Citroen campervan approach from the Cilgerran direction, and overshoot the junction.

The vehicle collided with his wall and drove off, but police later traced it to O’Hanlon who confirmed he was the driver and gave a positive breath test.

He was found to have 93mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg.

Alan Lewis, defending, said his client was very remorseful about this incident.

He had ordered a taxi home from the pub on the night in question, but it had failed to turn up.

He said: “He waited and waited. His dog was with him and hadn’t eaten, he hadn’t eaten. He felt alright and hoped it would be alight, and drove round the quiet back roads.

“A couple of days later he went back to the accident scene, spoke to the owners and rebuilt the wall for them.”

Mr Lewis added that his client had previously held a clean driver’s licence.

Following a probation report, Magistrates imposed a 12 month community order with 100 hours unpaid work. He was disqualified from driving for 23 months and ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

O’Hanlon said: “I apologise for appearing before you and for any wrongdoing I have done.”
