Memories of playing on the Maesglas play area going back decades were recalled at a public inquiry in Cardigan this week.

Local councillor John Adams-Lewis together with the North Cardigan Action and Support campaigners are fighting for the long-established play area to have official village green status.

Cllr Adams-Lewis lodged the application in February 2012. Local housing association Tai Ceredigion have objected to the application but refused to attend the Guildhall inquiry.

Local residents gave evidence that the area has been used by the community for several years dating back to the 1960s.

Sharon Griffiths told inspector Emyr Jones: "When we were kids we used to play there all day every day in the summer holidays. There was a gang of us and we'd be there from 9am in the morning."

Mr Jones, who will publish his decision later, told the inquiry: "I am not here to decide whether a village green is a bad or good idea nor whether there should be social housing there."

Campaigners have been fighting to secure the play area for the community for over two years.

Various applications by Tai Ceredigion to build on part of the site have been thrown out.

The latest approach - to let the town council take over the site in return for support of the building of a disabled bungalow - was also rejected.
