With rumours circulating in the area over the proposed development of a new Aldi store in Newcastle Emlyn the supermarket giant has given an assurance over its plan in Station Road.

But despite this and nearly a year after the Tivy-Side revealed the plan at the Castle Motors site it can be further revealed that Aldi is involved in a legal matter and unable to give an opening date for the new supermarket.

The site already had planning permission obtained by Liddl some years earlier but this did not come to fruition.

When announcing its plans in January last year an Aldi spokesman said the new store would create around 30 permanent jobs

But since then there have been few or no signs of any development and many people have asked pertinent questions as to the proposal.

Carmarthenshire County Council senior development officer Stephen Thomas said “The planning application has been approved but we are still waiting for the Section 106 legal agreement to be completed.”

A Section 106 Agreement is a legal matter under the Town and Country Planning Act which regulates the development of land in England and Wales.

A spokesman for Aldi said he could not go into detail over what was holding up the development but gave an assurance that the company is committed to Newcastle Emlyn

“What I can say is that this matter is progressing,” he said.
