A Llandysul woman sent her estranged husband up to 100 texts a day following the relationship break-up, a court has heard.

Melissa Jane Rees, aged 30, of 17 Parc Meiros, Velindre, pleaded guilty to harassment without violence when she appeared before Aberystwyth magistrates on Wednesday.

The court heard that Rees had continually texted and called Matthew Rees between April 16 and June 16, and turned up at his place of work in Cardigan.

Tom Scapens, prosecuting, told the court Mr and Mrs Rees’ 13 year relationship came to an end in April.

He said that following the break up Mr Rees was texted and called ‘non-stop’ by the defendant, who could send up to 100 texts in a day.

Mr Scapens said the texts were not of an abusive nature, but Mrs Rees also started to call his place of work on the Pentood Estate, and turned up at the premises on June 16.

Mr Rees saw her looking at him through the door and asked her to leave, but she grabbed him as they walked towards her car and started shouting.

Mr Scapens said: “She was gripping him and he was asking her to stop. He was alarmed by her behaviour and called 999, while fending her off with his free arm. She managed to get the phone off him and threw it away while he was talking to the operator.”

When arrested Rees admitted contacting her husband numerous times, and told police she felt abandoned by him.

David Williams, defending, said his client had previously been of completely clean character, and the regular texts had now stopped.

He said: “This offence was a direct consequence of the break-up of her relationship. She did not want to see her marriage end, and found it immensely difficult to come to terms with that.”

Magistrates imposed a 12 month conditional discharge, and ordered her to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The presiding magistrate said: “You realise this was a serious offence and is totally unacceptable. I am sure you will make an effort to turn over a new leaf today.”
