Plaid Cymru members in Carmarthen East & Dinefwr have selected former MP Adam Price as their candidate for the 2016 Welsh General Election.

The second of the two selection meetings took place this evening (Thursday 11th July) where party members voted overwhelmingly for the former MP to replace long-standing Assembly Member Rhodri Glyn Thomas who earlier this year announced he would not be contesting the next Assembly election.

Adam Price was elected as Member of Parliament for the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr constituency in 2001 and served until in 2010, when he stood down to study at Harvard University in Boston.

Mr Price’s nomination will now be presented to Plaid Cymru’s national executive for ratification.

Speaking after the selection meeting, the Chair of the Plaid Cymru constituency party, Councillor David Jenkins, said: “The overwhelming support for Adam from party members demonstrates the high regard in which he is held in this constituency.

“We are so proud that he will be representing Plaid Cymru in the next Assembly election. His integrity as a politician and ambition for our nation is an asset to the party and to Wales.

“We will not take any vote for granted. Our grass roots team of volunteers will continue to share our positive vision for Wales to each and every doorstep in the constituency to ensure Adam is elected in 2016.”

Adam Price added: “I’m grateful to the membership for again putting their faith in me, and selecting me as their candidate for the next Welsh general election.

“Rhodri Glyn Thomas has been a strong advocate for Carmarthenshire and has always put the constituents of Carmarthen East and Dinefwr first. I hope voters will entrust me to continue that good work in the Assembly.

“The priority for us all now is to ensure Jonathan Edwards is returned as the Member of Parliament in 2015 so that Carmarthenshire can continue to have a strong voice representing us in Westminster.

“Plaid Cymru has a very strong team of activists, councillors and national representatives throughout the county. I’m very much looking forward to being a part of that team once again.”
