KIRSTIE Simson will share her passion for the exploration of freedom through the solo when she presents an evening of dance improvisation on Saturday, June 23 (8pm) at Small World Theatre, Cardigan.

Through the use of humour, eye contact, dialogue and proximity, the performer invites the audience to join her on a journey as she negotiates her way through present moment decision-making that is inherent in improvised performances.

With light-hearted spontaneity this master performer affirms the fundamental positivity of life as she dances her way through this 45 minute work, celebrating the depth of human connection and potentiality.

Kirstie has been a continuous explosion in the contemporary dance scene, bringing audiences into contact with the vitality of pure creation in moment after moment of virtuoso improvisation.

Called ‘a force of nature’ by the New York Times, she is an award-winning dancer and teacher who has ‘immeasurably enriched and expanded the boundaries of New Dance’ according to Time Out Magazine, London.

Kirstie is an excellent teacher, a captivating performer and a leading light in the field of dance improvisation. She is a professor at the University of Illinois, and continues to teach and perform all over the world.

The performance will be followed by a short question and answer session with the artist.

The following day, Sunday June 24 (10am-5pm), following on from her solo performance, a workshop will be staged which will provide an opportunity to engage with Kirstie and her passionate interest in the liberating experience of dance, improvisation and the exploration of freedom.

Imagine what our relationship would be to dancing if we had no prior notion about what the moving body should look or feel like. Participants work beyond culturally conditioned expectations and other limitations.

They will celebrate movement using practices that Kirstie has developed over 35 years of teaching dance improvisation.

Suitable for ages 15-plus. Please note that under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Some movement experience recommended, but not absolutely necessary.
