Shakespeare’s Globe On Screen returns for its fifth year of sell-out performances and captivating theatre from the London home of Shakespeare.

The season opens with the critically-acclaimed The Duchess of Malfi which will be screened at Theatr Mwldan on Thursday, June 25 at 7.15pm.

The Globe’s production of The Duchess of Malfi is the first ever theatrical production to be filmed entirely by candlelight.

Directed by Dominic Dromgoole, with designs by Jonathan Fensom and music by Claire van Kampen, this truly unique production was created especially for the intimate atmosphere of the Globe’s new indoor space, with 250 candles used for each performance.

Mark Foster, CEO of Arts Alliance, said “We’re thrilled to be bringing Globe On Screen back to cinemas with such an exceptional line-up for 2015. Authentically capturing the unique candlelit setting of this production of The Duchess of Malfi on film is an incredible achievement and a stunning opening to the new season. These remarkable films will be a delight for cinema audiences around the world.”

The widowed Duchess of Malfi longs to marry her lover, the steward Antonio. But her rancorous brothers, Ferdinand and the Cardinal, are implacably opposed to the match.

When their spy, Bosola, discovers that the Duchess has secretly married and carries Antonio’s child, they exact a terrible and horrific revenge.

The Duchess of Malfi proved a truly sensational curtain-raiser for the very first season in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and stars Gemma Arterton as the Duchess, with Sean Gilder as Bosola, David Dawson as Ferdinand, James Garnon as the Cardinal, Denise Gough as Julia and Alex Waldmann as Antonio.

The Shakespeare’s Globe on Screen season also includes 4 shows from the Globe’s Summer 2014 ‘Arms and the man' season and all will be screening at Mwldan.
