“Strictly” is back on BBC 1 and if the lure of the sequins and the spray tan is calling you, then you need to learn some moves at The Guildhall, Cardigan, where every Thursday evening Ballroom and Latin teacher, Janice Hawtin leads three classes from absolute beginners to experienced social dancers.

This is now the fifth year of Ballroom & Latin classes at the Guildhall, you can learn Waltz, Social Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, Jive, Cha Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Samba and later on even Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Paso Doble.

You could be another Frankie Bridge or Jake Wood or maybe more of a Judy Murray or Tim Wonnacott, but either way, you’ll never know till you try, and the health and fitness benefits are great too. Julian Beynon-Lewis has been dancing for just four years, “ Ballroom dancing is hard work and really improves your fitness levels. It’s also quite mentally challenging: learning and remembering all the moves and then improving your technique takes real effort, but when you get there it’s very rewarding – and a lot of fun too”.

A recent study showed that the average Quickstep or Jive burns 600 calories an hour with even a slow Waltz or Foxtrot burning more than 400 calories.

Ballroom dancing attracts people of all ages too. “We have people from their early twenties to their late seventies and everything in between” said Julian, who also runs the social Dances at the Guildhall. “Our next dance is on Saturday 1st November at 8.00pm and this is a chance for people to try out some of the dances that they learnt in class. Of course the dances are open to everyone and people regularly come from as far as Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Haverfordwest to take part”

Classes are split into three groups every Thursday evening: 6.30pm Beginners; 7.30pm Improvers; 8.30pm Intermediates with a 9.30pm Practice Session. You can come with or without a partner, and the Guildhall is offering one FREE lesson to every new person coming for the first time in October – so what have you got to lose.
