Newcastle Emlyn ladies welcomed Cardiff University’s third team to Crymych on Saturday for their second encounter of the season.

After previously winning the away fixture, Emlyn were eager to get the three points once again. Cardiff University had the push back, showing speed and intensity from the first whistle. The midfielders had a task and a half to track and regain possession but Izzy Stedman, Caryl-Haf Lloyd and Mel Williams managed to slow their play down.

The defenders as always had to perform the strong tackles against fancy stick work from the university students, and credit was given to Lois Davies, Ellie Lloyd and Ffion Davies. The third player from the back trio - Sioned Davies played tactically by intercepting the ball on many occasions and attacking strongly down the right wing.

Through balls were getting to the attackers but unfortunately only being fortunate to upgrade to a short corner once in the first half. With minutes left of the first half, by playing advantage to the traveling team, their centre midfield managed to strike the ball to the bottom corner, taking them into the lead at half time.

Emlyn had to step up the tempo in the second half if they wanted to stay in the game, and the intensity came in the forward line. Great passing between Heledd-Mai Lloyd and Enfys Davies from the pushback meant gaining territory towards the attacking circle. With a cross from Williams, Sara Patterson managed to flick the ball over the goalkeeper to bring the game back equal.

The home team utilized this momentum and soon after Enfys managed to strike towards goal, and the ball went over the line off a defenders’ stick - Emlyn were in the lead.

With 20 minutes to go, impact players Lisa Hughes and Heini Llewellyn managed to track and follow their players to obstruct the university teams’ attack. Angharad Jenkins performed cracking saves, and the students tried their hardest to use their technical ability to get back into the lead.

Through grit and perseverance, the game came back equal to 2-2. Cardiff University hadn’t finished with their goal scoring when the right wing player reverse struck the ball elegantly to the back corner. Final score, Newcastle Emlyn 2 - 3 Cardiff University 3rds.

Emlyn battled until the end but the young university team stole the three points this time. Angharad Jenkins was awarded player of the match.
