Laugharne 15 Cardigan 15 Showing tremendous character the Cardis held the Carmarthenshire villagers in their own backyard to finish joint runners-up with them in Division 3 West, but the Teifisiders went through to this weekend's play-off decider against Division 3 East runners-up Abergavenny at Loughor by virtue of having won one more game than their rivals.

As the celebrations got underway delighted skipper Colin Trigger' Davies, who led by example throughout, said: "I am very proud of the squad and I would like to thank the coaching staff and also our wonderful supporters.

"Please come and cheer us on at Loughor on Saturday. It means so much to the lads," he said.

Laugharne held territorial advantage for lengthy periods but the visitors were extremely well-organised up front and kept things tight.

With a strong wind at their backs during the opening 40 minutes a 10-0 advantage for the Cardis did not appear enough of a cushion. But the visitors defended as if their lives depended on the result, no one doing better than winger Robert Davies who executed a number of timely tackles, and another to put in big hits was impressive hooker Nigel Kurish.

Cardigan put their opponents under pressure from the first whistle and took the lead after eight minutes. As the pack drove forward lock Mathew Gibsy' James picked up before crashing over wide out and skipper Davies converted.

Davies was just wide with a long range penalty before he increased the lead with a spot on kick from 35 yards and just before the interval was narrowly side from 45 yards.

Flanker and skipper Chris Mcillwrick was in fine form for Laugharne while scrum-half Adam Davies provided a fast accurate service to his partner Ross Harries who kicked superbly from hand during the second period.

Launching a counter attack midway through the half Cardigan scrum-half Michael Diggle went on the blindside and put skipper Davies over wide out.

Soon afterwards the visitors had a try disallowed for a foot in touch by Diggle and a score at that stage would surely have killed off the home challenge.

As it was Laugharne threw everything but the kitchen sink at the visitors who conceded a penalty in front of the posts and Harries made no mistake.

Laugharne had two players sin-binned before a bout of pressure culminated in hooker Mark Jones going over from close range to put the homesters within a converted try of their opponents.

Running down the clock Cardigan lost possession in midfield and the ball was switched out to right winger Sion Lynch who squeezed over in the corner.

Harries converted superbly from the touchline to bring the scores level and as the final whistle sounded the large Cardigan contingent in a crowd of around 400 at Wooford Park celebrated going through to the play-off.

Supporters' bus will be leaving the club, 11.15am, Saturday, 10th May, for Cardigan v. Abergavenny, at Lougher, price £2-00 return. Please phone Ian Gollop : 612576 to book seats.
