FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

There was a farcical ring to round one of the prestigious J Emrys Morgan Cup with clubs forfeiting ties and exceptionally high scores.

The competition for four leagues under the Central Wales FA saw Costcutter club Crannog bury Felindre 14-0 in Powys, Lampeter Town visit Llanwddyn and hit eight goals, Llandysul also netted eight times at home against Machynlleth Reserves while Padarn United of the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League brushed aside Maesglas 9-1 in Cardigan.

Unbeaten Division One leaders St Dogmaels turned in arguably their most accomplished performance for many a long day when serving up scintillating one-touch football in springing a 6-0 win over Newtown Wanderers of the Montgomeryshire Amateur League at Latham Park.

As the visitors turned on the style they led by two goals at the interval thanks to strikes by Peter Almond and Chris Morgan.

During the second period Saints goalkeeper Justin Smith was a virtual spectator as those in front of him upped the tempo and further goals came via Louis Harding, Jack Thomas, Almond who netted spectacularly from 40 yards after spotting the goalkeeper off his line, and Craig Williams.

Reigning champions Lampeter Town made the long trek to Llanwddyn pay dividends with a comfortable 8-0 win over the Montgomeryshire leaguers in a tie played on the shared Llanrhaeadr pitch.

It was virtually game, set and match before the interval with the visitors three goals clear thanks to Gethin Hunter, Richard Thomas and Luke Lovell.

As Town continued to dominate during the second half Lovell and Hunter were again on target, central midfielder Marc Evans bagged a brace and manager Terry Witts came off the bench at half time to hit the eighth goal from the edge of the penalty area.

Lampeter have been boosted by the return of Gethin Davies. The talented midfielder was with Llandysul last term but suffered a serious leg injury at the start of the campaign and it is only now that he is getting back to full fitness.

Cardigan Town travelled north to Aberdyfi with 11 players but the Magpies held too many aces for the home side who were flattered by the 2-0 scoreline. Midfielder James Evans netted a penalty and Tom Gardner was also on target.

It was a stroll for Llandysul as visitors Machynlleth Reserves of the Cambrian Tyres League were put to the sword and went down 8-0.

Jason Clayton led the scoring with four strikes and the other goals came via Ashley Summers (2), Kevin Jones and an own goal.

Elsewhere Llanboidy and Aberaeron Reserves reached the next stage as did Ffostrasol, the latter given a walkover after Maesyrhandir withdrew from the competition.
