FOOTBALL ROUND-UP

Cardigan Town of the Costcutter League have hardly set the scene alight this season but the young Magpies rose magnificently to the occasion in round two of Cwpan Coffa Dai Dynamo Davies with a 3-1 away win over unbeaten Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League leaders Bont.

With a crop of 16-year-olds in their ranks the visitors turned on the style on a heavy strip at Pontrhydfendigaid and victory is sure to act

as a morale booster before crossing the Teifi for a league head-to-head with St Dogmaels this weekend.

When Josh Mellor was brought down inside the penalty area midway through the first half the attacking livewire promptly got to his feet and

dispatched the spot kick with aplomb.

Tomos Toft doubled Town's advantage after the break but Bont showed why they are flying high in the league by putting the visitors under pressure but despite pulling a goal back were denied opportunities by a resolute defence in which goalkeeper Neal Evans was outstanding.

The Magpies weathered the storm, got a third goal and went close to increasing the lead on two other occasions.

Newcastle Emlyn also did the league proud when pulling out the stops to emerge 3-1 winners over Four Crosses of the Montgomeryshire League in gluepot underfoot conditions at Parc Emlyn to reach the last 16 of the Central Wales Cup.

The visitors, who made the trek from the Powys/Shropshire border, had their moments but having shared two goals in 90 minutes conceded two in extra time which put the hosts through.

Crosses nudged ahead in the 72nd minute when right-sided midfielder Nigel Jones fired home but Emlyn replied in double quick time leading

marksman Jake Kelly squared matters and the same player fluffed a chance to wrap matters up.

As Emlyn took the initiative in extra time Dion Phillips was the orchestrator on two occasions as Kelly and Corey Davies finished clinically.

At the same stage of the competition reigning Costcutter Division One champions Llandysul could not make the long journey into Powys pay dividends as they went down 4-1 against a useful Builth Wells of the Spar Mid Wales League.

The visitors gave it their best shot and matched their Spar opponents for lengthy periods, but despite getting on the scoresheet goals by Richard Powell who bagged a brace, Adie Jones and Harry Barnstable made it plain sailing for the homesters.

On the league front Crannog moved to within four points of Division One pacesetters Lampeter Town after a 5-2 win over Felinfach at the Urdd Centre in Llangrannog.

A Dylan Jones header put the coastal villagers on the scoresheet, prolific marksman George Colven increased the lead, Josh Tailorson got the

third goal, Mike Glove headed the fourth and Colven completed the home scoring.

In the Division Two table-topper at Llanboidy leaders Bargod Rangers dug deep to spring a 2-1 win over the west Carmarthenshire hosts in an

entertaining contest on a heavy Cae Dandre strip.

Central defender Dan Evans fired Rangers ahead during the first quarter but a miscued back pass to visiting goalkeeper Gethin Davies allowed Rhys Jenkins to bring the hosts back on level terms.

Defender Lyndon Robinson regained the lead for the Parc Puw outfit but soon afterwards he was sent off for a second yellow card.

Victory for Rangers sent them soaring five points clear of their rivals and established them as firm favourites to be crowned champions.
