Stuart close to nine-darter

A LOCAL player was within a whisker of achieving a magical nine-dart finish in the Cardigan Rugby Club Singles Darts League.

Stuart Davies of Llechryd, a salesman with Teifi Valley Building Supplies at Newcastle Emlyn hit three treble 20s during his first visit to the oche and did likewise on his second visit.

When the 30-year-old former Cardigan RFC front row forward hit a seventh treble 20 players on other boards stopped playing and when he followed up with treble 19 there was a deadly hush as players willed him to achieve the ultimate feat in darts.

Unfortunately there were to be no celebrations as Stuart just failed to hit double 12 with his ninth dart.

Afterwards the popular player said: "When I hit a seventh treble and then the eighth I thought I had a chance of pulling it off but it proved to be one dart too far."

World darts star Jamie Lewis of Cardigan, who also competes in the rugby club singles league and who achieved a nine-darter in a Professional Darts Corporation competition last year said: "Everyone was rooting for Stuart and although he couldn't quite get over the line it was still superb throwing."
